Church of Peace – a gem of Lower Silesian architecture, located in Jawor. The Evangelical church from the mid-17th century dedicated to the Holy Ghost was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002. Church of Peace was erected in years 1645-1655 as a timber-framed building; according to the order of Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand III, its constructors could use only clay and straw to bond constructing elements. There were several other constraints imposed by the Catholics upon the Lutherans: they had to build the church outside the city walls and of materials used normally to build barns and pigsties. Churches of Peace could not have a tower, which on one side decreased the range of the building and on the other emphasised the obedience to the will of the emperor and the complete acceptance of his orders. This all was meant to dismiss the ideas propagated by Martin Luther and his adherents. Lastly, the clay was replaced by bricks. The outer view is far less representative than the amazingly colourful, baroque interior.
